Getting Started

Requirements:

  • A little bit of space to dance, even the kitchen will be fine!
  • A “can do” attitude!
  • 4 weeks to be on the safe side.
  • A song with a 4/4, 2/4 or 2/2 time signature. No Waltz.

Tools & Resources:

Choosing a song:

If you haven’t chosen your song yet try these websites: The Knot,Top 100 Wedding Dance Songs and Bridal Guide. Hopefully you will find inspiration there!

Getting the beat:

If you find it difficult to hear the beat then head to songbpm.com and look for your song’s BPM (Beats Per Minute).

Once you have that BPM get a metronome (You can get it as a free app for your smart phone or if you are using a PC go here.) and set the BPM on your metronome.

Later on when you practice your steps, practice them with the metronome first and then with the music.

Editing your song:

If you wish to edit your song use Audacity. It’s a powerful free audio editor, you can download it here.

Tips:

Choreography:

We recommend that your choreography should be no longer than 2.5 or 3 minutes long. It will be a lot easier for you to memorise, and shorter choreographies often have a higher impact.

If your song is longer than 3 minutes (they usually are) then you have 2 options:

  1. Use Audacity to cut the song to your desired length (See “Tools & Resources” above)
  2. Get the Bridal party to join on the dance floor at the end of the choreography and dance the remainder of the song with you. Give clear instructions and put one person in charge of making sure the bridal party enters the dance floor at the appropriate time!
Learning:

Take your time. Especially in Module 1. The first few lessons might appear easy but they are the most important ones.

Go over each lesson several times.

Practicing:

Practice on the leader’s count first. Leaders: always count till 4 (1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4,…) and keep the same tempo (Don’t speed up your counting when a move is easy and slow it down when a move is hard).

Next practice with the metronome.

Lastly practice with your song.
